We believe that with the right preventative care and pet-owner education, your aging pet can continue to live a fulfilling and healthy life.

Helping Your Pet Age Gracefully

The good news is that even if your pet is aging, domestic pets these days are living longer than ever. Still, many pet owners find themselves asking, "at what point is my pet considered a senior, anyway?" This question can be difficult to answer because all species and breeds of pets can age very differently. For instance, a very large dog will tend to have a shorter lifespan and may be considered a senior at seven years old.

A veterinarian can help to determine whether your pet is nearing the senior years of its life with a physical examination and health evaluation. Generally, a pet is considered to be senior when they begin to show signs of an overall decline in health related to age. This could be anything from having more difficulty seeing or getting around to showing signs of more serious underlying medical issues, such as deteriorating organ function.

Fortunately, there are steps all pet owners can take to help their beloved pets age more gracefully and maintain their quality of life as much as possible. For example, if you have an older cat in your home, take some time to ensure all beds, litter boxes, and food/water dishes are easily accessible. For older dogs, consider "upgrading" your pet to an orthopedic dog bed and make sure your dog doesn't need to jump up high to get onto your bed (if allowed).

Watching Out for Signs of Age-Related Illness

Owners of aging pets should also be alert for signs of age-related illnesses, such as:

  • sudden changes in weight
  • unexplained lack of appetite
  • overall changes in energy or temperament
  • disorientation
  • lumps or bumps on the skin
  • changes in urination or stool patterns

If you notice any changes in your pet's behavior or health, it's always a good idea to schedule an appointment with our vet in Sunnyvale and Balch Springs. We can perform an assessment to check for additional underlying signs of medical issues so that we can diagnose and treat them as soon as possible.
